DESCRIPTION AND METHODOLOGIES

SIMHE (Supporting Immigrants in Higher Education in Finland)-Metropolia’s Guidance and Counselling Services consist of personal and group guidance for immigrants who are eligible to apply for higher education, have completed studies in higher education, or have completed a degree in higher education. The Guidance and Counselling Service has two service platforms: Personal Guidance Discussions and the Guidance Generalia lecture series.

Guidance and counselling aim at helping to find the most suitable study and/or career paths for immigrants. It helps acknowledging one's own skills and competences. It also helps realizing what one's strengths and weaknesses are and in what areas one may need improvement or more studies to be ready to enter further studies or working-life. Guidance and counselling are provided in the following ways: e-mail; information on the website; personal guidance discussion.

Through Guidance Generalia lectures, immigrants may get familiar with the Finnish education system and with the Finnish higher education system, in particular; obtain information on what and where one can study in Finland as an asylum seeker and as an immigrant; obtain information on how to apply for higher education; have ideas on what needs to be taken into account when planning studies; get extra knowledge on the selected and variable topic that is specific for each lecture. Guidance Generalia lectures are offered in Finnish and English.
