Checklist of things you (as a native student of a University) could do to find refugees and interact with them
  1. Find all the organizations that are working with refugees.
  2. Find out about their work.
  3. Ask them to bring you into contact with refugees that are interested in studying.
  4. Become a buddy! If a buddy programme is not available at your university, then start one!
  5. Become a volunteer: for example, Esraa Rabie, from the “Refugees Welcome” programme at the University of Bayreuth, indicated that before she started working with refugees she had no idea what their perspectives were like. Check out her story here.
  6. Universities are open spaces and involve many different fields. Therefore, you can develop an online tool or database where people from all fields – either students, academics or administrative staff – would like to be involved. As long as you have a pool of experts to support you when a need arises, you can contact them and ask for their help.
Tip: If you decide to take action, bear in mind that consistency is the key to turning these well-intentioned programmes into a real foundation of support for refugee students
