DESCRIPTION AND METHODOLOGIES

The Global Platform for Syrian Students (GP4SYS) aims at providing access to education in safe haven countries throughout the world. It offers a comprehensive, integrated higher education services package to Syrian students who are selected and then awarded a scholarship.

All Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) hosting students are invited to become members of the GP4SYS Academic Consortium. Participating universities commit to grant full or partial tuition fee waivers to Syrian students for at least one academic year. As members of the Consortium, HEIs have the opportunity to share their experience, contribute to international best practices and provide advice about questions of common interest. Consortium members are also eligible for special grants aimed at supplementing the support provided by their institutions.

Currently the following Portuguese Universities integrate the Consortium: Universidade de Lisboa, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Universidade do Porto, Universidade de Coimbra, Universidade do Minho, Universidade de Aveiro, Universidade de Évora, Universidade da Beira Interior, Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Porto & Lisbon), Universidade do Algarve, Instituto Politécnico do Porto, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, Instituto Politécnico da Guarda, Creative University (IADE), Universidade Lusófona (Porto & Lisbon), Instituto Politécnico de Tomar, Universidade Europeia de Lisboa, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, University Institute of Lisbon ISCTE.

New Higher Education Institutions in Portugal joined the GP4SYS Academic Consortium in 2018,
such as the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, the University of Trás-os-Montes (UTAD) and the Lusíada
University of Porto.

Further to awarding the sholarship, the program includes a wide range of services, namely admission to university, visas, transportation, university registration, housing, etc.

RESULTS AND IMPACT

53 new Syrian Students (37 young women and 16 young men) supported by the Global Platform for
Syrian Students arrived in Portugal in May 2018 on a humanitarian flight organized by the Portuguese
Air Force. After completing a 3-month intensive Portuguese language course, these students started
the 2018-2019 academic year in Portuguese universities throughout the country.

In 2018, 13 additional students got their Master’s degrees, 3 students got their Bachelor’s degree
and 1 student submitted his PhD thesis. Out of the 16 students who graduated, 8 were authorized
to continue with a GP4SYS scholarship (3 for a Master’s degree and 5 for a PhD program); 7 students
were hired and entered the job market and 1 student was looking for a job while developing her
linguistic skills.
