Description

The Final Conference "Together: caminhos de inclusão" took place on January 19, 2022, in Coimbra, Portugal, from 9am to 1pm at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra. It was attended by 54 participants, including administrative university staff, representatives of the third sector, policy makers in the field of higher education, students, public authorities in charge of refugees and other beneficiaries of international protection inclusion, as well as higher education professors, among others.

The Conference began with an opening session conducted by the Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra and the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra welcoming all the participants and sharing important thoughts regarding the theme’s conference, paths to inclusion. Afterwards, the presentation session of the project "Together - Innovative European Learning Path to Facilitate the Access of Refugees to Higher Education" took place. The IGC/HRC team first introduced the Centre and then presented the Together Project, in particular its aims and results.

The website was projected so that all participants could know and better understand its functionalities. Its different activities and results were described, as well as the project's objectives, target groups and achievements. After that, the three different intellectual outputs – refugees welcome map; training package and guidelines - were announced and their contents described. Finally, it was explained how these tools can be used and implemented by higher education institutions and the diverse users, and their role as potential multiplier agents of the project results, thus contributing to its transferability and dissemination.

Following this, a member of IGC/HRC made a brief theoretical introduction to the subject "refugees and other beneficiaries of international protection". At mid-morning we had a coffee break and then several sessions were held by different entities, organisations and associations.

Firstly, we had the presence of the head of the International Relations Unit of the University of Coimbra, who explained the work of the Unit in the welcoming of refugees and other beneficiaries of international protection at the University and the different services and initiatives carried out. Afterwards, an Erasmus+ project developed by Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra (https://www.whkt.de/avik/), regarding the social inclusion of refugees and migrants, was presented. Thereafter, the speaker from Centro Distrital da Segurança Social de Coimbra, replacing the one initially planned, also described their work welcoming refugees and other beneficiaries of international protection and the needed measures to ensure their inclusion. Finally, considering that the last association could not be present, they were replaced by two representatives of ELSA Coimbra (The European Law Students’ Association Coimbra) who spoke about its activities, including the ELSA Summer Law School about human rights, annually organised by them. At the end of the morning, the closing session was held.

Through this conference, all participants were able to get to know the project and its goals, understanding the usefulness of its tools and how they can implement them, so it is ensured its exploitation and sustainability. Additionally, the presence of the higher education community and also different entities, organisations and associations allowed an exchange of knowledge and experiences about the initiatives being developed with refugees and other beneficiaries of international protection, among other related issues, and the importance of creating synergies between all.
